Installing AEDs is the start, not the finish. An AED only saves a life if it works on the day it’s needed — and the Smart Heart Act expects ongoing readiness. Here’s how to keep your school’s AEDs rescue-ready.
What needs upkeep
- Pads — they expire; adult and pediatric as needed
- Batteries — track expiration and replace on schedule
- Status indicator — check the ready light regularly
- Signage and cabinets — intact, visible, unobstructed
Inspection & documentation
Log routine inspections (many schools do monthly checks) and keep records you can show your board or the state. Documentation is part of compliance, and it’s exactly what auditors ask for. Build it into your CERP and annual review.
Don’t let it lapse
The most common failure we find is an installed-and-forgotten AED with expired pads. A simple maintenance routine — or a managed program — prevents it.
