Does My Hotel Need to Comply?
Yes. Broward County’s local amendments to the Florida Fire Prevention Code (effective April 24, 2022) require all hotels and motels to maintain AED and BCK equipment. This applies to: full-service hotels and resorts, boutique hotels, national chains and franchises, extended-stay properties, motels, and properties in Delray Beach, Palm Beach County.
What’s Required
- AED and BCK installed in the lobby or elevator-accessible common area
- Wall-mounted locking cabinet with audible alarm and visibility signage
- Stickers on entry doors identifying device location
- Annual device verification by a qualified party
- Staff training through a nationally recognized organization (AHA, Red Cross, or NSC)
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Properties found out of compliance during fire inspection are subject to citations and fines from the Broward County Fire Marshal. Beyond fines, an AED gap during a cardiac emergency creates significant liability exposure for property owners and management companies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do national hotel brands need to comply?
Yes. Broward County’s AED mandate applies to all hotels and motels regardless of brand affiliation. National brands do not receive exemptions from local fire codes.
How many AEDs does my hotel need?
Most hotels require at least one AED/BCK station in the main lobby within 15 feet of the primary elevator bank. Larger properties or those with multiple buildings may require additional units. We assess your property during a free site evaluation.
What happens during an annual verification?
We confirm the device powers on, pads are within expiration date, the battery is functional, and the cabinet alarm is operational. Rescue Beats provides a compliance certificate you can present during fire inspections.
Can Rescue Beats train our hotel staff?
Yes. We provide on-site CPR and AED training certified through the American Heart Association. Training is available in English, Spanish, French, and Haitian Creole in South Florida.
