The Smart Heart Act requires more than equipment — it requires people who know how to respond. Here’s what North Carolina schools need to know about CPR and AED training requirements.
Who needs to be trained
The law calls for annual CPR and AED training for key staff. Think broadly about who “key” means — the more trained people on campus, the more likely one is nearby when seconds count:
- School nurses and health staff
- Athletic directors, coaches, and athletic trainers
- Front-office and administrative staff
- PE teachers and anyone regularly around students
How often
Certifications must be current — a card from three years ago doesn’t satisfy the requirement. Plan on annual renewal and keep a simple training tracker as part of your CERP documentation.
What good training looks like
Effective training is hands-on and specific to your building — staff should practice on the exact AED model you have and know where every unit is. Rescue Beats delivers on-site CPR/AED training through nationally recognized programs and provides the certificates for your records.
